SIGAL Construction Is Home To Arlington's First Green Commercial Interior
ARLINGTON, VIRGINIA, September 5, 2007 - SIGAL Construction's Corporate offices were awarded the US Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design - Commercial Interiors (LEED-CI) Silver status. This is the first LEED-CI project to receive certification of any level in Arlington County.

The USGBC's LEED Rating System is recognized as the national standard for accepted benchmark for the design, construction, and operation of high performance green buildings. SIGAL's corporate offices encompass 18,161 square feet and achieved all 27 of their attempted credits.

"Sustainable design and construction is the clear way of the future," said Gerry Sigal, owner and founder, SIGAL Construction, "We are honored to be recognized for our corporate offices' contribution to the environment."

More than 23% of the materials used in constructing SIGAL's new offices are recycled and all of the paints, sealants and carpets are ultra-low VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) emitting, which promotes better worker health. Almost 40% of the materials used in constructing the new office were regionally extracted and manufactured, supporting the local economy and minimizing the energy and waste created by transporting them from other regions.

The breakdown for SIGAL's LEED credits is as follows:
Sustainable Sites: 2 Points
Water Efficiency: 2 Points
Energy & Atmosphere: 3 Prerequisites and 5 Points
Materials & Resources: 1 Prerequisite and 6 Points
Indoor Environmental Quality: 2 Prerequisites and 8 Points
Innovation in Design Process: 4 Points

"SIGAL was a pioneer in the Green Building concept back in the 1980's when we began working with owners and developers in the planning phase of major construction projects to incorporate environmentally preferable methods and materials into project specifications," said Sigal. "Leading through example, SIGAL was a founding member of the Green Building Council and one of the original committee members that helped spearhead the Green Building Council LEED rating system." SIGAL's team for this project included WDG Interior Architecture (Washington, DC) providing architectural services, Sustainable Design Consulting (Richmond, VA) providing LEED Consulting Services, and GHT Limited (Arlington, VA) providing mechanical and electrical engineering services.

Founded in 1977, SIGAL is one of Washington's premier general contractors, known in the industry for high quality, cost consciousness, excellent client relations, and an ability to tackle unique and challenging jobs.
