SIGAL Project Wins DC Preservation League Award

Arlington, VA, May 2016 — SIGAL Construction Corporation celebrated at this year’s DC Preservation League 45th Anniversary & Awards which honored individuals, corporations, and projects that have had a catalytic effect through their contributions to the city’s civic and cultural legacy over the past 45 years. SIGAL’s project, 1718 Connecticut Avenue NW, received an award as a significant early example of compatible infill development in the Dupont Circle Historic District in a postmodern idiom.

Completed in 1982, 1718 Connecticut Avenue, NW is a 50,000 SF, seven (7) story retail and office building planned by Ellen Sigal of SIGAL Development and designed by David M. Schwartz Architects. The street façade of the building was designed to match the neo-Romanesque architecture of the neighborhood with arched openings and round windows in brick. The streetscape and overall massing of structure is careful to respect the historic district. The rear of the building is a simpler international style design in concrete, a dichotomy echoing that of the historic row houses and commercial buildings that were often built with ornate street facing facades and plainer rear facades.

Gerry Sigal, Founder and CEO of SIGAL, states, “I am so glad to have built such a unique building that has had such an impact on the Dupont Circle Historic District.”

SIGAL congratulates the entire project team, as well as DC Preservation League for celebrating 45 years of preserving and protecting DC’s built environment.
